FREEDOM HISTORY BOOKS AVAILABLE AT THE TOWN
HALL ************* Freedom Area Historical Society Newsletter Fall 2007 Volume 1, Number 1 The Freedom Area Historical Society (FAHS) serves the Towns of Center, Freedom, Kaukauna, Oneida & Osborn This is the first newsletter published by the FAHS. It is being sent to all FAHS members. At this time, we have no planned schedule for publishing future newsletters, but we do intend to continue the practice. It's difficult to find the time to get the necessary information and articles together for printing. If any of you have stories, pictures, events coming up, etc. you think would be of interest to historical society members, we want to include them in our newsletters. Please email or mail the information to Pat Konkle, or any other board member, or drop it off at the Freedom Town Hall. Also, if you would like to help write the newsletter, the board would be extremely grateful for the help. * * * * YOU ARE INVITED * * * * The FAHS Board of Directors wants to hear from you! All members are invited to attend our monthly board meetings. Regular board meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at the Freedom Town Hall. Our next meeting is scheduled for October 11th. Please join us to share in the discussions, ask questions and offer suggestions. Or, just come and observe! We hope to see many of you Thursday, October 11th at 9:00 a.m. at the town hall! Building Site for FAHS Plans are underway to have a building constructed at Rickert Park on McHugh Rd, thanks to the wonderful generosity and support of Ron and Colleen Weyers. The Freedom Town Board agreed to let the historical society have a building at Rickert Park with the stipulation that we add a pavilion and restroom that is accessible from the outside for public use. Ron and Colleen, along with Ron's brother, Terry Weyers, recently met with the FAHS board members to review the preliminary building plans. The building is modest in size, with 1,787 sq. ft. for the Society's building and 539 sq. ft. for the pavilion. The plans will be available for your viewing at our October 11th board meeting. Rural School Project The FAHS board is in the process of researching the one-room school houses that served families in the Freedom Area School District, in order to preserve school memories for present and future generations. Through research at the UWGB Cofrin Library, we found that fourteen (14) district schools operated in this area at some point from 1896 to 1965. Many of the schools were joint districts, meaning they served families in more than one town. Maps prior to that time show at least two additional rural schools operated in the area. Unfortunately, neither UWGB nor the Freedom School District office has records prior to 1896. Board members have been sending surveys to former students, whose addresses we are able to locate, in order to learn what it was like to attend a rural school many years ago. If you attended a rural school and have not yet been contacted, please let us know. We are interested in hearing about your experiences and memories, as well as receiving any school related pictures or memorabilia. We can scan pictures and return them to you if you do not want to part with them. We also want to know of anyone that has records from a one-room school. Perhaps your parent, grandparent, or great grandparent was on the school board and saved some of the old records. We would love to have copies or the original records. At some point in the future, we also plan to gather this same type of information about parochial schools in the area. So, if you attended one of the parochial schools, we want to hear about your grade school experiences also. FAHS Wants Your History Whether it's family history, business history, genealogy, obituaries, pictures, scrapbooks, maps, artifacts, or other items, we want to help preserve your information and objects for current and succeeding generations to enjoy and learn about the past. How You Can Help the Society We need help verifying and obtaining addresses of Freedom High School alumni so we can contact them about the FAHS. Basically, you would look over our master list and check the information for your family and friends. If you find errors, you would record the correct information on our "correction form". The master list is available on paper and in Microsoft Excel. If you have Microsoft Word on your computer, we have typing you can do in your home. If you like to do research, there are ways to help with that. When we move into our building, there will be many more ways you can help. 501(c)(3) Status Received The IRS has approved our application for tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization. This means your donations are tax deductible, as well as any matching funds your employer may donate. Annual Membership Dues All FAHS membership dues are annual, except for Lifetime.
